Hope for the Peaceable Kingdom

The dictionary defines hope as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. At a deeper level it is a feeling of trust. We live in a time when hope is needed more than ever before. When we see on the news channels the stories of wars, violence, disasters and despair, it is easy to lose hope for a better world. Getting back to our definition of hope, we desperately need that “feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.” What is that certain thing? I like to call it “the peaceable kingdom.” In the peaceable kingdom there are no more wars and violence. No more despair, because all people will be treated equally and fairly. No more hungry children. No more oppression and no more tears. You may ask, “Is such a place possible?” I believe it is. I am hopeful that the time will come when all things will be made new and clean and fresh. The peaceable kingdom is my hope, and I see glimpses of it every day, because there are good and amazing people who are doing wonderful things for children and for our planet. I choose to focus on these good things because they give me hope, hope that the day will come when there will be a new heaven and a new earth and there will be no more tears: the peaceable kingdom. We are given this promise in the Bible: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth” Revelation 21. Look around and see the good in others, and you will see the beginnings of a better world, a peaceable kingdom.
