Cost and Worth- Insight for Today

"How much does it cost?" "What's it worth?" These two questions may sound alike, but they are different. Very different.
"Cost" is the amount of money it takes to complete a purchase . . . the bill, the tab, the monetary expense required to accomplish a financial transaction. "Worth" is the usefulness of the object . . . the benefit, value, and importance of the thing purchased. It is the long-lasting return we derive from the item. Justification for paying a certain cost is usually determined on the basis of the personal worth that accompanies the purchase.
One other distinction must be emphasized. "Cost" is cold, objective, and even painful. Nor is it necessarily easy to accept. That's where "worth" plays a vital role. In our minds we juggle the unemotional, hard facts of cost along with the subjective, magnetic appeals of worth. Worth, when it does its job, convinces the buyer that either the cost is acceptable, or it says, "Don't do it . . . it isn't worth that kind of money."
The difference between handling our money wisely or foolishly is largely determined by the interplay between these two forces. Obviously, we have spent wisely when the cost is eclipsed by the worth. Again, that must be determined individually. That is why, in the long run, we can usually determine a person's scale of values by the things he or she purchases. Or, to use the words of Jesus: "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matt. 6:21).
So next time you ask, "How much does it cost?" think also about "What's it worth?" This is especially true when we are deciding how to spend the money God's people have given for the upkeep and ministry of the church. While our stewardship should guard against extravagance, we certainly do not want to clothe the riches of Christ in rags.
Think about Sundays—your church life and the motivation you receive. Think about your children and their future. And their children's future. Think about your neighborhood—unreached individuals by the hundreds. Think about the possibilities of radio or television outreach, perhaps a Christian school, enlarged missionary outreaches, room to grow, room to park! What's it worth?
Deciding whether something is worth the cost requires intense, effective, prevailing prayer, as well as the hard work of objective thinking. And then it requires courage to act on God's clear direction.
Ministries that stay alive are forever moving forward—walking along the ridge called "faith" overlooking that chasm called "impossibility."

Devotional from In Touch Ministries

Scripture:  Luke 8:19-21
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him for the crowd. 20 And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you." 21 But he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."
Meditation: Who do you love and cherish the most? God did not intend for us to be alone, but to be with others. He gives us many opportunities for developing relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Why does Jesus seem to ignore his own relatives when they pressed to see him? His love and respect for his mother and his relatives is unquestionable. Jesus never lost an opportunity to teach his disciples a spiritual lesson and truth about the kingdom of God. On this occasion when many gathered to hear Jesus he pointed to another higher reality of relationships, namely our relationship with God and with those who belong to God.
What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrine, precepts, and commandments. It is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity. 
God seeks a personal intimate relationship with each one of us
God offers us the greatest of relationships - union of heart, mind, and spirit with himself, the very author and source of love (1 John 4:8,16). God's love never fails, never forgets, never compromises, never lies, never lets us down nor disappoints us. His love is consistent, unwavering, unconditional, unrelenting and unstoppable. There is no end to his love. Nothing in this world can make him leave us, ignore us, or withhold from us his merciful love and care (Romans 8:31-39). He will love us no matter what. It is his nature to love. That is why he created us - to be united with him and to share in his love (1 John 3:1). 
God is a trinity of divine persons - one in being with the eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and a community of undivided love. God made us in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26,27) to be a people who are free to choose what is good, loving, and just and to reject whatever is false and contrary to his love and righteousness (moral goodness). That is why Jesus challenged his followers, and even his own earthly relatives, to recognize that God is the true source of all relationships. God wants all of our relationships to be rooted in his love and goodness.
The heavenly Father's offer of friendship and adoption
Jesus Christ is God's love incarnate - God's love made visible in human flesh (1 John 4:9-10). That is why Jesus describes himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep and the shepherd who seeks out the sheep who have strayed and lost their way. God is like the father who yearns for his prodigal son to return home and then throws a great party for his son when he has a change of heart and comes back (Luke 15:11-32). 
Jesus offered up his life on the cross for our sake, so that we could be forgiven and restored to unity and friendship with God. It is through Jesus that we become the adopted children of God - his own sons and daughters. That is why Jesus told his disciples that they would have many new friends and family relationships in his kingdom. Whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family - his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
Through Jesus Christ we become brothers and sisters - members of God's family
Lucian of Antioch (240-312 AD), an early Christian martyr once said that "a Christian's only relatives are the saints"- namely those who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and adopted as sons and daughters of God. Those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ and who live as his disciples enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood. 
Our adoption as sons and daughters of God transforms all of our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God first and to his kingdom of righteousness and peace. Do you want to grow in love and friendship? Allow the Holy Spirit to transform your heart, mind, and will to enable you to love freely and generously as God has loved you.
"Heavenly Father, you are the source of all true friendship and love. In all my relationships, may your love be my constant guide for choosing what is good and for rejecting what is contrary to your will."

The Moon is Rising

As the sun descends

Why does the question matter

We are all so busy
We hardly notice such things

Psalm 22

I recently read the words of the poem and song, Psalm 22. It gave me new insight into the mind and heart of Jesus as he hung on the cross. His words "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" took on new meaning as I read them in the context of Psalm 22. Look at each word in the Psalm and see if they ring deeper and more meaningful to you than ever before--I know they did for me today. Here they are, written a thousand years before his death:

22 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

Which Shall Love Him More?

Scripture:  Luke 7:36-50 
36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of  woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." 40 And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" 41 "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" 43 Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." 
44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." 48 And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" 50 And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Meditation: What fuels the love that surpasses all other loves? Unbounding gratitude for sure! No one who met Jesus could do so with indifference. They were either attracted to him or repelled by him. Why did a Pharisee invite Jesus to his house for dinner and then treat him discourteously by neglecting to give him the customary signs of respect and honor? [This account has some similarities to the account of Simon the leper in Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3, as well as the account in John 12:1-8.] Simon was very likely a collector of celebrities. He patronized Jesus because of his popularity with the crowds. Why did he criticize Jesus' compassionate treatment of a woman of ill repute - most likely a prostitute? The Pharisees shunned the company of public sinners and in so doing they neglected to give them the help they needed to find healing and wholeness.
The power of extravagant love and gratitude
Why did a woman with a bad reputation approach Jesus and anoint him with her tears and costly perfume at the risk of ridicule and abuse by others? The woman's action was motivated by one thing, and one thing only, namely, her love for Jesus - she loved greatly out of gratitude for the kindness and forgiveness she had received from Jesus. She did something a Jewish woman would never do in public. She loosened her hair and anointed Jesus with her tears. It was customary for a woman on her wedding day to bind her hair. For a married woman to loosen her hair in public was a sign of grave immodesty. This woman was oblivious to all around her, except for Jesus. 
Love gives all - the best we have
She also did something which only love can do. She took the most precious thing she had and spent it all on Jesus. Her love was not calculated but extravagant. In a spirit of humility and heart-felt repentance, she lavishly served the one who showed her the mercy and kindness of God. Jesus, in his customary fashion, never lost the opportunity to draw a lesson from such a deed.
The debt of gratitude for mercy and forgiveness
Why did Jesus put the parable of the two debtors before his learned host, a religious Jew who was well versed in the Jewish Scriptures and who would have rigorously followed the letter of the Law of Moses? This parable is similar to the parable of the unforgiving official (see Matthew 18:23-35) in which the man who was forgiven much showed himself merciless and unforgiving. Jesus makes clear that great love springs from a heart forgiven and cleansed. Peter the Apostle tells us that "love covers a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). It was love that motivated the Father in heaven to send his only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus, to offer up his life on the cross as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. The woman's lavish expression of love was an offering of gratitude for the great forgiveness, kindness, and mercy Jesus had shown to her.  
The stark contrast of attitudes between Simon and the woman of ill-repute demonstrates how we can either accept or reject God's mercy and forgiveness. Simon, who regarded himself as an upright Pharisee, did not feel any particular need for pardon and mercy. His self-sufficiency kept him from acknowledging his need for God's grace - his gracious gift of favor, help, and mercy.  Are you grateful for God's mercy and pardon?

REJOICE IN THE LORD  

REJOICE IN ME ALWAYS! No matter what is going on, you can rejoice in your Love-relationship
with Me. This is the secret of being content in all circumstances. So many people dream of the day
when they will finally be happy: when they are out of debt, when their children are out of trouble,
when they have more leisure time, and so on. While they daydream, their moments are trickling into
the ground like precious balm spilling wastefully from overturned bottles.

Fantasizing about future happiness will never bring fulfillment, because fantasy is unreality. Even
though I am invisible, I am far more Real than the world you see around you. My reality is eternal and
unchanging. Bring your moments to Me, and I will fill them with vibrant Joy. Now is the time to
rejoice in My Presence!

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! . . . I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have
plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in
plenty or in want.

12 Steps to Freedom

I have a good friend who is kind, compassionate, and honest to me and everyone who knows him. “How do you do it?” I asked one day. “How can you be so kind and loving to everyone—it almost seems unnatural?” Here’s what he said to me:

“Gene, I haven’t always been like this. I used to be angry and resentful to my family and to everybody. I had a terrible drug addiction that was destroying my life and the lives of everybody who cared about me. The day came when I thought I would end my life—I didn’t want to go on living like that. And then someone who still loved me took me to an AA meeting where there were a lot of other people sitting around in a circle. They took turns speaking and they all said they were alcoholics and drug addicts. The difference, they said, is that now they go to AA meetings 3 times a week, follow the 12 Step Program with the support of a sponsor, and now they live happy and meaningful lives free from their addiction.”

So I said to my friend, “What are the 12 steps?” He explained by naming them as they appear on the walls of AA meetings all over the world:

1     1.  We admitted we were powerless over (name of addiction)—that our lives had become unmanageable.

2    2.  Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3      3.  Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we          understood Him.

4     4.  Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5     5.  Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of            our wrongs.

      6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

      7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

 8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to   them all.

 9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so       would injure them or others.

 10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to (addicted persons) and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

 My friend explained that addiction is a medically diagnosed disease that affects tens of millions of people all over the world. If you have a loved one who suffers from addiction, please refer them to a professional trained in the disease, and participate in a good and recognized 12 Step Program group in their area. Addresses of such groups are easily obtained on the internet. My friend told me that members need to remain anonymous, so don’t advertise their names, please.

Spiritual Painting

I recently purchased a painting from St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. To me, it is very spiritual and meaningful. It has three persons in the painting: On the left is the painting of Eve, the mother of all humanity, our first mother of all creation. She is standing in a garden of flowers and other plants--the Garden of Eden.
 In the center is Noah, standing next to the ark he constructed, and there is a rainbow, God's symbol of the covenant to humanity to never again destroy the earth with floods. To me, he is the symbol of God's eternal covenant with mankind--the recreation of the earth and replenishment with people and animals. 
On the right side of the painting is the picture of Mary, the mother of Jesus. I can see the cross and the plants and grasses beneath, symbolizing the resurrection and new creation of heaven and earth.
All of this shows me God's eternal plan for mankind--creation, forgiveness and re-creation, and resurrection and eternal life with Him.
When I think of this painting hanging on the wall of my apartment, and I look at it every day, I realize that this is the Greatest Story Ever Told--all depicted in the Holy Bible from Genesis to Revelation. This is God's plan of love for each of us. Tears well up in my eyes and I rejoice for His great love for each of us. Hallelulah, Amen!
